Jesse BARNES was born in Baldock, Hertfordshire, in 1866, son of William Gutteridge Barnes and Matilda Barnes (nee Long), one of their seven children. At the time of Jesse’s birth his father William was a serving soldier. His parents were married on 2nd July 1865, in Weston, Herts
He was Baptised on 27th May 1866, in the Parish of Clothall, Herts.
1871 Census records Jesse aged 5, living with his parents and sister Mary (2), in Pembroke Street, Stoke Damerel, Devon. His father was a serving soldier and stationed in the area.
1881 Census, Jesse is recorded as Tom, aged 15, he has left school and is working as an agricultural labourer, living with his parents, three sisters and two brothers in London Colney, Herts. His father William has left the army and is now working as an agricultural labourer.
In 1887 his mother Matilda Barnes died, aged 44.
Jesse married Emma Smith on 6th May 1888, at the St Albans Registry Office, they went on to have five children, two died in infancy.
1891 Census, Jesse (24) is recorded as married to Emma they have two children Ellen (2) and Mary (4 months), living in London Colney, Herts.
In 1908 his father William Gutteridge Barnes died, aged 63.
1901 Census, Jesse, Emma and their four children are living at 16 Main Road, London Colney, Herts. On the night of the Census, they had three visitors staying with them.
1911 Census, Jesse, Emma, son Arthur (18) and daughter Elizabeth (15) are living in High Street, London Colney, Herts.
Wartime Service
Jesse enlisted at St Albans, Herts, on a Short Service for the duration of the war on 4th August 1915, giving his age as 40 years (his correct age was 49 years). Posted to the Army Service Corps, joining them on 6th August 1915, at Aldershot, Hampshire, and issued with the service number T4/126768.
Just 10 days later he was sent to France arriving on 16th August 1915. He returned to the London General Hospital on 18th October 1915, for medical treatment. He was discharged from the Army under “Para 392 (xvi) KR” no longer physically fit for war service on 2nd March 1916. Jesse died on 8th April 1917, from ‘Malignment Disease of the Stomach’. The location of his burial was not found.
Additional Information
Although he had been discharged from the Army before his death his widow Emma was awarded a Military pension of 15/- a week. At the time the family was living at Lilly Villa, The Parade, London Colney, Herts.
