William Edward was born on 26 Feb 1894 in Elstree to Edward Mason, and Charlotte (nee Carmody).On the 1901 Census the family were living at High Street, Elstree. On the 1911 Census William was employed as a houseboy. William had 6 brothers and 1 sister. Sometime between 1911 and 1916 he migrated to Windsor, Ontario, Canada.
Wartime Service
William attested on 3 Apr 1916 in London, Ontario. He gave his occupation as Car Inspector (assumption that this was ticket inspector on streetcars) and his address as Aylmer Ave, Windsor. He was assigned to 70th Battalion and with them he sailed for England on 24 Apr 1916 arriving on 5 May 1916. After some training he was transferred as a reinforcement to 58th (Central Ontario) Battalion in France joining them for Duty on 21 Jun 1916. He was reported Missing and later presumed dead on 20 Sep 1916 during the Battle of Flers-Courcellette. His remains were and he is burired in Courcellette Cemetery on the Somme Battlefield and remembered on the Elstree memorials

Four members of the Mason family served in the Forces: Father Edward (Ex-Driver), and his three sons Pte W. E. Mason, Pte A. J. Mason, and Driver M. C. Mason.
