Frederick George was born on 29 Jul 1891 (baptised 30 Aug 1891) in Little Amwell to Charles Ward, builder’s labourer, and Mary Ann (nee Starr), a laundress.
On the 1901 Census Frederick was living with his parents, elder brother Thomas, a brewer’s labourer and elder sister Emma, a laundress at the Street, Little Amwell. On the 1911 Census Frederick was living with his widowed mother (his father had died in 1903) and his elder brother Thomas still at the Street. Little Amwell. Both Frederick and Thomas were working as labourers.
Wartime Service
Frederick enlisted as Private SR/6559 in Duke of Cambridge’s Own (Middlesex) Regiment. No Service Record was found for Frederick. The prefix could indicate the he was a Special Reserve.
Frederick when to France with 2nd Battalion Middlesex on 7 Nov 1914 as part of 8 Division. They were to take part in the first planned battle of the Great War, Neuve Chapelle (10 Mar 1915). Frederick was killed in action on 10 March 1915 during the initially successful period of the battle.
His remains were not recovered and he is remembered on the Le Touret Memorial.
Additional Information
War Gratuity of £3 and arrears of £ 6 18s 3d was shared equally between his mother and his guardian, William Henry Farnham.
