Pre War

Albert was born 13 Feb 1880 in Datchworth to James Croft and Jane Emma (nee Burgess).

On the 1881 Census Albert was living with his parents at the Heath, Little Amwell with his elder brothers James (born 1874), George (born 1876), Frank (born 1877) and Harry (born 1879). On the 1891 Census was living in Great Amwell with his parents, brothers George, Frank and John (born 1887) and sisters Flora (born 1882), Margaret (born 1895 and Maryann (born 1888).

Albert enlisted as Private 3325 in 4th Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment (Militia) on 3 Mar 1896 giving his occupation as gardener and age 18, after some training he joined a regular Battalion of the Regiment. Albert’s family continued to live in Great Amwell and Hertford Heath.

Wartime Service

Albert’s Great War record of Service could not be found and so no details can be confirmed. He may have served his time on service and also completed any Reserve commitment and so it is likely that he volunteered soon after the declaration of War in 1914, joining the Bedfordshire Regiment as Private 22769 in the 6th Battalion.

At some time he was promoted Sergeant and also transferred to 6th Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment with the Service Number of 43050. Albert married Ethel Childs at Holy Trinity Church, Little Amwell on 14 Sep 1918. He may have died in 1920 after surviving the Great War.
