Leonard Frank Young was born on 15 June 1895 in Tring, Herts, the son of Frederick and Elizabeth Young, and baptised on 29 September 1895 in Tring, Herts. He was one of eight children.


On the 1901 Census the family were living at 5 Grove Farm, Tring where his father was employed as a Stableman (Groom). They had moved to 23 Station Road, Berkhamsted by 1911 and Leonard was then working as an apprentice at the cycle works.


He emigrated to Canada, leaving and worked as a machinist, living at 147 Wellington Street, North Hamilton.

Wartime Service

Leonard attested on 25 November 1915 at Hamilton and joined the 120th City of Hamilton Battalion.


He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia on the 'Empress of Britain' on 14 August 1916, arriving at Liverpool on 23 August. From there he proceeded overseas for service with the 87th Battalion and was taken on strength in France on 14 November 1916 before joining his unit in the field on 16 December 1916.


He was admitted to No. 5 General Hospital, Rouen, France with pleurisy on 26 July 1917 and was returned to England and admitted to the Royal Victoria Hospital at Netley, Southampton on 8 August 1917. After treatment he was transferred to Woodcote Park Military Convalescent Hospital, Epsom on 24 October and discharged on 30 November 1917 before returning to active duty. 


On 5 September 1918 he was admitted to the 3rd Canadian General Hospital at Boulogne with gun shot wounds to the neck resulting in paraplegia. He was seriously ill and died of his wounds on 6 September 1918. He is buried in Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille, France.

His mother received his arrears of pay.


Mr Young, 75 West Avenue North, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. ordered his headstone inscription which reads: "IN LIFE WE LOVED YOU DEARLY IN DEATH WE DO THE SAME".
