George Wright was born in 1869 in Berkhamsted, the son of James and Elizabeth (Betty) Wright, and was baptised at Berkhamsted on 21 February 1869. 


On the 1871 Census the family were living at Gossoms End, Northchurch, nr Berkhamsted, where his father was working as a gardener. They had moved to High Street, Northchurch in 1881.


He married Phoebe Priscilla Miller on 3 November 1894 at Northchurch, Herts and they had a daughter Ellen in 1897 and were living at 31 Ellesmere Road, Northchurch on the 1901 Census, at which time he was working as an engine driver (manufacturing). Their son Thomas as born in 1902 and they had moved to 23 Mill Street, Berkhamsted by 1911 when George was working as a general labourer. His widow later lived at 114 George Street, Berkhamsted.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Hertford and initially served with Hertfordshire Regiment under reg. no. 24054, later transferring to the Royal Defence Corps, No. 3 Supernumerary Company.


George died on 27 June 1916, aged 47, from 'wounds self-inflicted during temporary insanity due to disease contracted on active service'. 


He is buried in Woolwich Cemetery, London. His name is recorded on a special memorial in Section F which records the names of fourteen ww1 casualties who were buried in grave numbers 600 and 601.

Additional Information

His widow received a war gratuity of £5 and pay owing of £2 2s 10d. She also received a pension of £1 a week.
