Bert Rance was born in 1892 in Berkhamsted, Herts the son of Daniel and Emily Rance and one of seven children.


His father died in 1900 and on the 1901 Census Bert was living at Potten End, nr Berkhamsted with his widowed mother and sisters Caroline, Edith and Bessie. In 1911 they were living at 4 The Front, Potten End, Berkhamsted, and Bert was working as a farm labourer. His mother died in 1912.

Wartime Service

Bert enlisted in Berkhamsted and initially served with the Bedfordshire Regiment , reg. no. 25178, later being transferred to the Northamptonshire Regiment. 


He was killed in action on 17 February 1917. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France.

His eldest sister Gertrude E Sarsons received a war gratuity of £3 10s and pay owing of £6 18s 5d,
