Pre War

George Prosser was born in 1888 in Aylesbury, Bucks, the son of Thomas and Lucy Prosser and was baptised on 11 April 1888 at Great Berkhamsted. He was one of eight children, but one had died in infancy.

On the 1891 Census the family were living on the 'James and Mary', official no. 8775 at the Grand Junction Canal, Northchurch, Berkhamsted. His father was the Captain of the boat and he was one of four children in the family at that time.

By 1901 they had moved to 39 Castle Street, Berkhamsted and his father was working as a general labourer. Thirteen year old George was then working as a butcher's boy. They moved again by 1911 and were then living at 25 Bridge Street, Berkhamsted. At that time George was working as a painter in the building trade.

He married May Warren in 1913 at Berkhamsted and they lived at 62 George Street, Berkhamsted.

Wartime Service

George enlisted in Berkhamsted and served with the 6th Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment.

He died of wounds at No. 56 Field Ambulance on 9 November 1916 and is buried at Pozieres British Cemetery, Ovillers-La-Boiselle, France.

Additional Information

His widow received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £2 11s 3d. She also received a pension of 10 shillings a week, which later was increased to 13s 9d a week.
