Pre War

Thomas Laughton was born in 1893 in St Andrew's, Orkney, Scotland, the son of David and Rebecca Laughton.

On the 1901 Census the family were living at Little Quoys, Orkney where his father was working as a House Carpenter.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Deerness, Kirkwall, Orkney and joined the 5th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.

He died in Ripon, Yorks on 14 June 1916, aged 23 and is buried in Ripon Cemetery.

His father received a war gratuity of £3 5s and pay owing of £3 4s 1d.

Additional Information

His father, Mr D Laughton of Castle, Quoyburry, P O Kirkwall, ordered his headstone inscription: "THE RACE APPOINTED I HAVE RUN THE COMBAT'S O'ER THE PRIZE IS WON".

Roll of Honour website has this soldier as Private Thomas Laughton, service no. 4335 of the Seaforth Highlanders, and although this seems to be the only T Laughton on the CWGC website, all other researches suggest this is unlikely to be the T Laughton at Berkhamsted as he was born and raised in Orkney and his parents resided there.

If you have any information to the contrary or can provide information as to the identity of the T Laughton at Berkhamsted, please let Herts at War know.
