Pre War

Roland Edwin Hill was born on 12 October 1899  in Tring, Hertfordshire, the son of Edwin and Elizabeth Frances Lyne Hill, and baptised at Tring on 3 December 1899,

On the 1901 Census they were living at the Gardens, High Street, Tring where his father was working as a gardener foreman. His father died and on the 1911 Census Roland was living with his widowed mother at Hanover House, Boxwell Road, Berkhamsted, Herts. His mother was said to be living on own means and Roland was a scholar.

He was educated at Chigwell School, Essex where his name appears on the Roll of Honour.

Wartime Service

He enlisted with the Royal Navy (Royal Navy Transport) in October 1917 as a midshipman and suffered from influenza for 5 days in early December.

His commission and appointment was said to be terminated for misconduct on 6 February 1918, although later cancelled and he was to be retained. He became sick again at the depot at Crystal Palace, probably from influenza and retained in sick bay until able to travel.

He died at home from influenza and pneumonia on 1 November 1918 aged 19.

Additional Information

Roland is remembered on his mother's grave at Berkhamsted Rectory Road Cemetery. It is not known where he is buried.

N.B. There is some confusion between Roland Edwin Hill, Royal Navy died 1918 and Roland Edwin Hill of The Kings Liverpool Regiment who died 1915. Both were aged 18.
