Pre War

Albert Final was born in Berkhamsted in 1894, the son of  John and Fanny Final and one of eleven children. He was baptised on 15 August 1894 in Great Berkhamsted. 


His father died in the summer of 1899, aged 50, and on the 1901 Census he was living with his widowed mother and siblings, Alfred, Rose, Harry, Nellie and George, at 2 Station Road, Berkhamsted. They had moved to 8 Thompson's Row, Sunnyside, Berkhamsted by 1911 and Albert was then working as a labourer in a chemical factory. 


His mother later lived at 25 Ellesmere Road, Berkhamsted. 

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Berkhamsted and initially served with the 1st Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment in France from 23 November 1914, later being transferred to the 4th Battalion. 


Albert was killed in action on 8 February 1917 and is buried at Ancre British Cemetery, Beaumont-Hamel, France. 

Additional Information

His mother received a war gratuity of £11 10s and pay owing of £11 0s 4d. She also received a pension of £3 a week, rising to £5.
