This soldier cannot be positively identified. Two possibilities are shown below, however neither of them seem to have any direct link to Berkhamsted. 


1. George Edward Cole:  Private 7866, 1st Bn, East Yorkshire Regiment. killed in action/died of wounds in France on 21 September 1914, son of Thomas and Emma, and buried in Vendresse British Cemetery, France. 


2. G E  [George Edward] Cole, Rifleman 4595, 17th Bn, London Regiment, who died of wounds on 1 January 1917 and is buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium,
