Pre War

Frank Channing was born in Britford in 1884 the son of Emmanuel and Annie Channing and one of six children, although two died in infancy. He was baptised on 19 October 1884 at Homington, Wiltshire, and the family were then living at Well House, Britford, Wiltshire where his father was a labourer.


On the 1891 Census the family were living at Well House, Britford, where his father was working as an agricultural labourer. They remained in Britford in 1901 and 16 year old Frank was then working as a groom domestic. 


By the 1911 Census Frank was working as a servant at the home of widower Arthur Drake and his daughter at nearby Dogdean, Salisbury.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Salisbury and served as motor driver with the Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry (Reg. No. 1348), later transferring to the Royal Wilshire Hussars. 


He was killed in action on 12 November 1917.  He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium. 

Additional Information

His father obtained probate of his son's estate in Salisbury on 15 April with effects of £129 9s 9d. He received a war gratuity of £14 10s and pay owing of £11 3s 2d,

The connection with Berkhamsted is not known. but it is possible he was working in the area at the time of enlistment.
