Pre War

Albert Burgess was born in Great Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire with a sister Emma and brother William. 


It has not been possible to positively identify Albert from birth or census records. 

Wartime Service

Albert enlisted in Hertford and served with the 7th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. 


He died on 26 October 1917 from wounds received in action during the Battle of Ypres. The Battalion were in the area of Canal Bank and Cane Trench and had been subjected to a great deal of shelling the previous day, some of it from their own guns which fired short. 

Additional Information

A war gratuity of £14 and his pay owing of £6 15s 8d was equally divided between his brother William and sister Emma. 


N.B. The Berkhamsted Town Memorial lists an A. Burgess and an A. J. Burgess. The St Peters Church Memorial, Berkhamsted only lists an Albert J Burgess of the 12th Middlesex Regiment.
