Pre War
Frederick George was born in 1890 in Gaddesden Row, Hemel Hempstead, the eldest son of Walter Chapman, a gardener, and Eliza (nee Lawrence). One of seven children.
He was baptised on 11 May 1890, in the Parish Church Great Gaddesden, Herts.
On the 1891 Census the family were living at 1 Ivy Lodge, Gaddesden Row, where his father was working as a coachman (domestic servant). In 1901 the family moved to Grange Cottage, Allum Lane, Elstree when his father was working as a Groom & Gardener. By 1911 they had moved to Boreham Wood and Frederick was also working as a gardener.
Frederick married Edith Cain in 1915 in Barnet and lived at 4 Newcombe Street (Park Hill), Harpenden (with his parents-in-law Mr & Mrs Cain).
He lived at 1 Malden Road, Borehamwood, Hertfordshire.
Wartime Service
Frederick enlisted in St Albans and served as Private G/35035 in the 4th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment).
He was killed in action on 16 August 1916 at Delville Wood on the Somme. His remains were not recovered and he is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing.
Additional Information
A war gratuity of £3 and arrears of £2 8s 2d were paid to his widow Edith. She also received a pension of 10 shillings a week.
His widow later lived at Lower Litton Road, Harpenden, Herts,
