Pre War

Charles Ronald was born on 9 Aug 1898 in Harpenden to Arthur H Newton, colour manufacturer, and Kathleen (nee Berridge).The family were part of Winsor & Newton, artists’ supplies. 


They were living at Clarence Road, Harpenden and on the 1911 Census at Treglissson, Moreton Ave. Harpenden.

Wartime Service

Charles was enlisted in the Royal Field Artillery as Bombardier 168017 He was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant on 3 Nov 1917 and attached to "D" Battery CIV (104) Brigade RFA.


He was killed in action 20 Sep 1918.

Additional Information

Elder brother Arthur Douglas served as Major, RFA and was killed in Palestine Oct 1917. War Gratuity of £6 and arrears of £64 13s 8d paid to his father.
