Pre War

Charles Henry was born in Harden, Yorkshire on 9th May 1849 to Thomas Wainwright Lord, a bookkeeper, and Martha (nee McFarlane). On the 1861 Census he was at school in Bridport, Dorset.


He gained a commission as Lieutenant, Royal Surrey Regiment on 4 May 1872, residing in Richmond, Surrey. He became Captain, 3rd Battalion East Surrey Regiment on 20 Nov 1881 and Major, Royal Welsh Fusiliers on 15 Apr 1887.


He married Margaret Mary Louisa Scrope in 1897 in Kensington, London. On the 1901 Census the family were living as boarders at the Beeches, Grove Hill Lane, Hemel Hempstead. By the 1911 Census Charles & Margaret were living at Moreton Avenue, Harpenden and Charles was working as a stockbroker.

Wartime Service

On declaration of war in Aug 1914 although 65 years old he requested a post and was reinstated in his old Regiment, Royal Welsh Fusiliers as a Major.


He was assigned to 10 (Service) Battalion being raised in Wrexham in Oct 1914. The Battalion moved to Bournemouth in Nov 1914. 


He died of a heart attack after participating in training on Salisbury Plain on 30 December 1914.

Additional Information

Probate of £144 5s 7d and arrears of £95 1s 8d paid to his widow. His sonEustace Charles Gabriel, served in Irish Guards, was killed in action 8 May 1918
