George William was born on 29 Oct 1897 in Harpenden to Herbert Bell, a Labourer, and Emily (nee Smart). The family lived at Leyton Green, Harpenden. He had an elder sister and 2 younger brothers.

Wartime Service

George enlisted in the Suffolk Regiment as a Private. He was given the Service Number 21997, this was later changed to 50227. He was killed in action on 4 May 1917 during operations during the Battles of Arras and the Scarpe, Arras. He is remembered on the Arras Memorial.

War Gratuity of £6 10s and arrears of £3 15s 6d paid to father.
