Arthur Perry was born on 5 Nov 1889 (baptised 1 Dec 1889) in Great Dunmow, Essex to Henry Perry, a carman, and Harriet (nee Nelson).
On the 1891 Census the family of parents, Harriet (born 1885), Emma (born 1885), Henry (born 1887), Beatrice (born 1888) and Arthur were living at Church End, Great Dunmow.
On the 1901 Census his father was the keeper of a Common Lodging House in South Street, Bishop's Stortford which housed 16 boarders as well as the family of parents, Harriet and Emma (apprentice dressmakers), Henry, Beatrice, Arthur and William (born 1895).
On the 1911 Census, William, a cabinet maker, was living with his family of parents, Emma and Beatrice (milliners) and Arthur (grocery assistant) at Riverside, Causeway, Bishop's Stortford (his father was a lodging house keeper).
Wartime Service
No Service Record was found for Arthur, he may have enlisted soon after the declaration of the Great War in Aug 1914 at Oxford as Private 14770 in the Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. He was transferred to 7th (Service) Battalion, Duke of Edinburgh’s (Wiltshire) Regiment as Private 14703 and went to France on 2 Jan 1915 with the Battalion as part of 79 Brigade 26 Division.
This Division was transferred to the Salonika Front in Nov 1915. The Division took part in the Battle of Doiran in (Aug 1916) where the Ox & Bucks Light Infantry captured Horseshoe Hill, and in 1917 the First Battle of Doiran 24-25 Apr 1917 and second Battle (8-9 May 1917). The Division remained in Salonika while 7th Wiltshires returned to France arriving in Jul 1918 joining 150 Brigade in 50th (Northumbrian) Division to take part in th Battles of the Hindenberg Line (12 Sep – 12 Oct 1918) including St Quentin canal (Sep 1918), Beaurevoir and Cambrai (3-9 Oct 1918) and pursuit to the Selle( 9-12 Oct 1918). Arthur was Killed in Action on 6 Nov 1918.
Additional Information
War Gratuity of £24 and arrears of £3 4s 10d was paid to his Father Henry. Brother William served with 36 Field Ambulance RAMC and died of wounds 10 Aug 1917.
