Not a lot is known about Herbert’s Military service other that on his enlistment he was posted to “The Queens” (Royal West Surrey Regiment) with the service number T/203257.
He was Killed in Action on 6 April 1918, aged 40. He is buried in CWGC Bouzincourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France. It is possible he enlisted after the death of his eldest son Stanley Herbert (known as Herbert) who was Killed in Action on 16 November 1916, aged 19.

The value of his effects was £11-6s-2d, Pay Owing and £3, War Gratuity which went to his mother Eliza Ann Holliman.

Mr. W. Holliman, Alexander Road, Chipperfield, Kings Langley, Herts. ordered his headstone inscription: "GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN". Perhaps the W should be H for his father's initial.
