*1 These memorials commemorate a 'C A Stambridge', who the Diocese records confirm has a connection to Hertford and that he was an ‘Acting’ Bombardier in the Royal Regiment of Artillery (Royal Field Artillery). They also commemorate a ‘F C Stanbridge’ who the Diocese, similarly, confirms has a connection to Hertford and that he was a Bombardier in the Royal Regiment of Artillery (Royal Field Artillery).
Research has been undertaken using the CWGC, SDITGW and other military records for all combinations of ‘Stanbridge/Stambridge’ and ‘Royal Field Artillery/Royal Horse Artillery/Royal Garrison/Artillery’ and so far the only man found, who died, and who might fit, is Acting Bombardier 36656, Charles Frederick Stambridge in the Royal Garrison Artillery. Certainly no F C Stanbridge has yet been found, possibly he was discharged, died later and therefore not recognised by the CWGC, however initial searches of the Silver War Badge records has not found him.
It is possible that C G Stambridge could be either man, so clearly there is some doubt, but we have assumed him to commemorate ‘C A Stambridge’ because of the spelling of the surname, the commencing initial of ‘C’ and because he is shown to me an ‘Acting’ Bombardier, which all match. Further research may enable us to be more positive or to amend these records or find F C Stanbridge.
