James Smith was born in Braughing, Hertfordshire in 1890, son of William Smith a Groom and Alice Mary Smith (nee Edwards). One of ten children although one died in infancy.
He was Baptised on 25th May 1890, in the Parish of Braughing, Herts. At the time the family were living at Hamels Lodge, Braughing, Herts.
1891 Census records James aged 11 months, living with his parents, and brother William (2) in Puckeridge, Herts.
1901 Census, James (10), his parents, three brothers and two sisters, are now living at 6 Prospect Road, Cheshunt, Herts.
1911 Census, we believe James (18) was employed as a Groom, living at The Stables, Hamels Park, Braughing, Herts. His parents, brother Arthur and his three sisters are living at 2 Elm Cottages, Cadmore Lane, Cheshunt, Herts.
Wartime Service
James enlisted at Tottenham, Middx, joining the Duke of Cambridges Own (Middlesex Regiment) with the service number L/14279. (We believe he was in the Army or in the Territorial Force at the outbreak of war), as he arrived in France on 22nd August 1914, with the 4th Battalion, later transferred to the 3rd Battalion. He was promoted to Lance Corporal in the field.
James was Killed in Action on 25th March 1915, he has no known grave, he is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial to the missing in Belgium.
Additional Information
His effects of £10-4s-6d, pay owing and his war gratuity of
£5, went to his Mother Alice Smith.
