William was the second son of William and Elisabeth (nee Barwick) of Bygrave, Hertfordshire. He is recorded as born in Baldock on the 5th June 1883, but it is believed to be Bygrave - Baldock may have been the postal address for Bygrave.
Before enlisting William was a farm labourer. He lived and enlisted in 50 Common View, Letchworth.

Wartime Service
William enlisted at Letchworth and served with the 1st Battalion of the Bedfordshire Regiment, Regimental number 14413, in the Western European Theatre of War, France and Flanders. He was killed in action on 11th April 1915.
Killed on Hill 60. Reported in Citizen 28/05/1915. His body was originally found at map ref. 28.1.29.c.95.25 and was identified by his identity disc and paybook.
