Pre War

Stanley Bertie Woodward was born 1898 in Nottingham.


On the 1901 census he is listed as a visitor, aged 2, with the Bryan family. Also on the 1901 his mother Emily Woodward is listed as a Coo-op Storekeeper, living in Bingham, Notts. On the 1911 Census he is living with his adopted parents Henry, a colliery fitter, & Emily Parker (nee Woodward), together with their own children, Doris Edna and Francis Henry, at 212, Stanton Road, Burton upon Trent.

Wartime Service

Stanley enlisted on 19 Nov 1914 in the North Staffs Regiment as a Territorial, Private 3322. He volunteered for overseas duty and was posted to 2/6th Battalion.


He had given his age as 17 years & a few months. (i.e. he was underage for overseas service). He was training with the Battalion in the Harpenden area when he was taken ill. He died of pneumonia in the Institute, Harpenden and is buried in St Nicholas Churchyard, Harpenden.

Additional Information

His mother, Mrs. E. Parker, 212, Stanton Rd., Stanton, Burton-on-Trent, ordered his headstone inscription: "FOR EVER WITH THE LORD". War Gratuity of £3 and arrears of £2 0s 5d was paid to his mother.
