Pre War

His parents were Amos Clarke 1861 – 1895 and Elizabeth nee Parker 1862 – 1942.  They had four children: Edith Ellen b.16/3/1892, Florence b.1894 and three brothers, Thomas, John and Albert. All of whom who joined up in the 1st World War and survived.

In the 1891 England Census Amos Clarke is listed as a farm labourer and the family are living in Furneux Pelham.  The Clarke family are an old Furneux Pelham family.

In the 1911 England Census Edith Ellen Clarke and Florence Clarke are listed as employed at The Chequers Hotel, 19 North Street, Bishops Stortford and Thomas – a horsekeeper on farm and living at the family home in Furneux Pelham.

He married Alice Heath 1892 – 1919 in the October quarter 1913, registered at Bishops Stortford.

Wartime Service

Enlisted 2nd November 1915.

On his British Army WW1 Medal Rolls Index Card (ref: WO372/4) it states date of entry 11.12.15 and Theatre of War as II.


Additional Information

All three brother survived the war.

His second marriage was to Mabel E. Warwick 1891 – 1971 in the October quarter 1927, registered at Bishops Stortford.

He had two sons, one from each marriage, Rodney and Edward Clarke and died 19th June 1962 at 169 Rye Street, Bishops Stortford.
