Wartime Service

Alexander (as he was known to the Army) volunteered for the Bedfordshire Regiment as Private 15428 on 7 Sep 1914. He gave his occupation as a Felt Hat Finisher.

Alexander remained at the Depot until 25 Jul 1915 when he went to France with 6th Battalion serving until returning to UK on 8 Mar 1916 due to Bronchitis and Influenza. Records do not show a promotion to Lance Corporal. On 5 Jan 1917 Alexander again went to France re-joining the 6th Battalion at Loos until 12 Mar 1917 when he was returned to UK with Pleurisy. He was medically discharged on 23 Jun 1917 requiring sanatorium treatment and was awarded his Silver War Badge number 216287. He died early 1919 aged 22 years and is buried in Harpenden.
