We believe this to be the H J Pike on the Cheshunt Town Memorial
Henry (Harry) James Pike was born in Hoxton/Shoreditch, London, in 1876, son of Henry Charles Pike a, Carman and Mary Pike (nee Collins). One of seven children.
1881 Census records Henry Jr. as James H Pike aged 8, at school living with his parents, sisters Mary (10), Elizabeth (7), and brother Samuel (5) at, 92 Hertford Road, Hackney, Middx.
1891 Census Henry Jr. aged 15, has left school and is employed as a Burnisher (a polisher ), living with his parents, brother Samuel and three sisters, Harriet (8), Ann (6) and Edith (2) at, 13 Downham Road, Hackney, Middx. His father is now recorded as a Cad Proprietor. The family had seven Lodgers.
1901 Census, Henry Jr. is employed as a Boot Warehouseman, living with his parents, and four sisters, at 9 Kingsbury Road, Islington, Middx. The family had one boarder.
Henry Jr. Married Ada Louisa Kelly, of Clerkenwell, Middx, daughter of Henry Thomas and Susannah Kelly, at the Church of St Paul, Canonbury, Essex Road, Islington, Middx, on 23rd August 1902. They went on to have two children Gladys Adelaide born 1904 and Harold Ernest born 1906.
1911 Census, Henry Jr., Ada and the two children are living at, 8 Perkins Road, Ilford, Essex. His occupation is given as a Salesman, His retired father Henry Snr., is living with the family.
Between late 1911 and 1912, Henry Jr. and the family emigrated to Canada where they settled in Kamloops, British Columbia. He was in the local Militia “The Rocky Mountain Rangers” when war was declared.
Wartime Service
At the outbreak of war Henry travelled to Vancouver, to enlist. He enlisted as Harry Pike in August 1914, posted to the 7th Battalion, (11th Irish Fusiliers of Canada) Canadian Infantry (British Columbian Regiment) and issued with the service number 16595.
Sailing for England with his unit in October 1914. While stationed at Tidworth Camp, Salisbury Plain, Wiltshire, he was taken ill with Bronchitis and admitted to Tidworth Military Hospital, he was found to be physically unfit for military service and returned to Canada in March 1915. He was discharged as no longer Physically fit for war service in April 1915. Henry Jr./Harry died on 17th November 1918, of Pulmonary Tuberculosis, he is buried in Kamloops (Pleasant Street) Cemetery.
Additional Information
Henry Jr./Harry did not Qualify for the British War or Victory Medal.
It is believed his widow Ada and the two children, Gladys and Harold returned to England.
