on the Cheshunt Town Memorial
James William Halls was born in Helions Bumpstead, Essex, in
1888, son of Frederick William Halls a, Cow Stockman and Ann Halls (nee Brazier).
One of twelve children although one died in infancy.
He was Baptized at St Andrews Church, Helions Bumpstead,
Essex, on the 3rd June 1888.
1891 Census records James aged 3, living with his parents,
brothers Ernest (4) and Sydney (1) in, Helions Bumpstead, Essex.
The family moved from Helions Bumpstead, Essex, to Cheshunt,
Herts in 1893.
1901 Census records James aged 13, living with his parents,
seven brothers and sister Emily (7), at, 23 King Edwards Road, Waltham Cross,
Herts. His uncle Herbert Halls was living with the family, and they had a boarder,
Ernest Spooner.
1911 Census records James aged 23, his occupation is
recorded as a Nursery Garden Labourer, living with his parents, eight brothers,
sisters Emily (16) and Dorothy (10), still in King Edwards Road. The family had
a boarder, Charles Jermany.
James married Elizabeth Beale in 1912, the marriage was
registered in Edmonton, Middx, they went on to have two children James Dudley
Halls born in 1913 and Elizabeth Blanch Halls born in 1914.
Wartime Service
James enlisted at Bedford, Beds, posted to the Bedfordshire
Regiment with the service number 35959.
On completion of his training he arrived in France, for
service on the Western Front. He was Killed in Action on 15th April
1917, in the area of Gravelle. He is buried in the CWGC Bailleul Road East Cemetery,
at St Laurent-Blangy, in France.
Additional Information
Elizabeth received a widow’s pension of 22/11 a week from 12th
November 1917, and his effects of £2-11s-2d, Pay Owing and his War Gratuity of
£3.
