We believe this is the E. W. Johnson on the Cheshunt Town Memorial
Ernest Walter Johnson was born in Maulden, Essex, on 21st June 1896, son of Henry George Johnson a, Cowman and Edith Matilda Johnson (nee Bentley). One of five Children.
1901 Census records Ernest aged 4, living with his parents, brother Herbert (11) sisters Winifred (9), Gertrude (7) and Beatrice (1) at, 39 Station Road, Cheshunt, Herts. His uncle John Johnson (27) was living with the family.
1911 Census, Ernest (14) had left school and was working as a Milkman’s Assistant, living with his mother Edith, sisters Gertrude (17) and Beatrice (11) at, 4 Melbourne Road, Waltham Cross, Herts. The family had tree boarders living with them. His father Henry was away from the family home on the night of the Census.
Wartime Service
Ernest enlisted in the Royal Naval Air Service in June 1916, aged 20, and trained as an Air Mechanic, issued with the service number F/17153.
He was serving at Manston Naval Air Station, Kent, when he was Accidentally Killed on 22nd March 1918, aged 21.
He is buried in Minster (Thanet) Cemetery, Kent. Plot 93.
Additional Information
His mother Edith received a Dependents Pension of 9/6 a week from 26th September 1918. Her recorded address was 86 Nags Head Road, Ponders End, Middx.
