We believe this to be the H. E. Green on the Cheshunt Town Memorial
Herbert E. Green was born in Waltham Abbey, Essex, in 1891, son of William Green an Army Pensioner and Messenger and Charlotte Green (nee Edwards). Believed to be the youngest of nine children.
His parents William Green and Charlotte Edwards were married in February 1871, in Great Warley, Essex, Charlotte’s home town.
The 1871 Census records William (34) a Sergeant in the Army married to Charlotte (22), their address is Milton Barracks, Milton, Gravesend, Kent. It is believed William was serving with the 1st/19th Regiment of Foot.
1901 Census records Herbert aged 8, (true Age 10) living with his eldest brother William (29) and Williams family in, Gilbert Street, Enfield, Middx.
1911 Census record for Herbert not found.
Wartime Service
Herbert travelled to Kensington to enlist at the HQ of the 13th (County of London) Princess Louise's Kensington Battalion of The London Regiment in August 1914, issued with the service number 1762.
On completion of his training, he sailed for France, disembarking on 4th November 1914, at Le Havre, with his Battalion. Seeing action on the Western Front. He was Killed in Action on the 27th May 1916. He is buried in the CWGC Hebuterne Military Cemetery in France.
Additional Information
His effects of Pay Owing and a War Gratuity of £8, was split between his mother Charlotte, Sisters, surviving Brothers and Sister-in-Law Florence Green. (Brother Henrys wife).
His elder brothers Corporal 4/5701 Henry Green was Killed in Action on 12th March 1915, and brother Private L/6231 Percy Lewis Green was Killed in Action on the 31st October 1914.
