William Charles Green was born in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, on the 31st May 1885, son of William James Green a, Riverman and Elizabeth Green (nee Pearce). One of eight children although one died in infancy.
William Jr. attended St Marys Infant school, Cheshunt starting in March 1889, then on to Dewhurst Endowed Boys School, Cheshunt, leaving in September 1898, aged 13, to start work.
1891 Census records William Jr. aged 5, at school, living with his parents, sister Alice (12), brothers William (5) and George (2) at, 2 New River Cottages, Brookfield Lane, Cheshunt, Herts.
1901 Census records William aged 15, working as a Nursery Garden Labourer, living with his parents, four brothers and sister Edith (9) , still in Brookfield Lane, Cheshunt.
1911 Census records William aged 25, single, working as a Nursery Garden Labourer, living with his parents, four brothers and sister Edith (19), still in Brookfield Lane, Cheshunt.
Wartime Service
William Jr. enlisted at Tottenham, Middx, joining the Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) with the service number L/10477. It is possible William Jr. was a member of the Royal Fusiliers, Territorial Force when war was declared, and volunteered for overseas service as he arrived on the Western Front in November 1914, with the 1st Battalion, Royal Fusiliers.
He died on the 30th August 1915, from injuries received in a bombing accident.
Additional Information
His effects of £15-15s-5d, Pay Owing and his War Gratuity of £5-10s-00, went to his father William James Green.
His younger brother Private L/9698 Albert John Green of the 4th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers was Killed in Action on the 26th October 1914.
His service number indicates he could have enlisted in the Royal Fusiliers Territorial Force in 1903, aged 18.
