Stanley Joseph Morton was born in 1899 in Berkhamsted, Herts, the son of James and Minnie Morton and baptised on 17 September 1899 in Great Berkhamsted. He was one of five children, although one died in infancy.
On the 1901 Census the family were living at 21 Ravens Lane, Berkhamsted, where his father was working as a coachsmith. They remained there in 1911 at which time Stanley was a scholar.
His father had been a territorial soldier with the Hertfordshire Regiment from 1901 to 1914 but had been discharged on 7 October 1914 as being medically unfit for further military service.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Watford, Herts and initially joined the East Surrey Regiment as Private Reg. No. 38258, later transferring to the Royal West Surrey Regiment.
He was initially declared missing, believed killed in action on 23 August 1918. He is now buried in Meaulte Military Cemetery, France, although the exact location is unknown and a special memorial in the cemetery is dedicated to him and others who are believed to be buried there.
Additional Information
His father received a war gratuity of £5 and pay owing of £3 12s 0d. His mother received a pension of five shillings a week and, while living at 21 Ravens Lane, Berkhamsted, Herts. ordered his headstone inscription: "THEIR GLORY SHALL NOT BE BLOTTED OUT ".
