Pre War
Ronald George was born in 1895 in Elstree (baptised 17 Nov 1895 to George Henry, and Rose Ellen Ruggles (nee Scott). On the 1901 Census the Family of Father, Mother, Ronald, Eileen (born 1901) were living at the Ship Inn, Wheathampstead and George Henry is listed as a publican.
In 1904 another sister Barbara was born and the Family were living in Southend on Sea. On the 1911 Ronald was listed as an errand boy, and George as a hotel porter with address as 66 Darnley Road Southend.
Wartime Service
Ronald enlisted at Southend as Private 24698 in 11th Battalion Essex Regiment. The Battalion were engaged in the Battle of Morval (25 – 28 Sep 1916) during the Somme Offensive. Roland was wounded and despite treatment at 34 Casualty Clearing Station located at Grovetown he died on 26 Sep 1916.
Additional Information
His mother, Mrs. R. Garland, 78, Darnley Rd., Southend, Essex., ordered his headstone inscription: "TO LIVE IN THE HEARTS OF THOSE WE LEAVE BEHIND IS NOT TO DIE". War Gratuity of £3 and arrears of £3 15s 4d was paid to his mother.
