Richard Spillett was born on 8th December 1894, in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, son of George Spillett a, House Painter, and Alice Spillett (nee Bunyan). The second of eight children although one died in infancy.

Richard started school on 16th October 1889, at St Mary’s Infant School, Cheshunt, leaving in May 1902, to go to Dewhurst Endowed Boys School, Cheshunt, leaving in June 1908, to start work.

1901 Census records Richard as Dick, aged 6, living with his parents, brother George (8), sisters Alice (4), (1897 – 1902) and Annie (1), at, 5 Albury Grove Road, Cheshunt, Herts.

He was Baptised on 22nd June 1902, in the Parish Church, Cheshunt, with brother George, sisters Alice, Annie and Hellen.

1911 Census, Richard (16) is working as an Errand Boy, living with his parents, brothers George (18), William (7) and sisters Annie (11), Ellen (9), Lena (9) and Dorothy (1) at 47 Windmill Lane, Cheshunt. 

Wartime Service

Richard enlisted at Ponders End, Middx, posted to the Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) and issued with the service number L/16149. On completion of his training, he arrived in France, on 12th May 1915, with the 3rd Battalion, Later transferred to the 4th Battalion.

Richard died on 27th July 1916, of wound received in action at the Battle of the Somme. (Battle of the Somme, 1st July – 18th November 1916). He is buried in the Corbie Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France, Grave Ref; I. G. 14.

Richard served with the 1st, 3rd & 4th Battalions of the Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment). 

Additional Information

His mother Alice received a Dependents Pension of 5/- a week from 3rd July 1917 and his effects of £2-17s-7d. pay owing and his war gratuity of £11.
