Pre War

Percy Young was born in January 1889, in Stoke Newington, Middx, son of Edward Young a, Gardener and Harriet Annie Young. The Youngest of four children.


He was Baptised on 17th February 1889, at St Andrews Church, Stoke Newington.


1891 Census records Percy aged 2, living with his parents, sister’s Lily (12), Rose (11) and brother Herbert (4) at, 16 Bethune Road, Stoke Newington, Middx.


1901 Census, Percy (12), his parents, sister Lily (22) and brother Herbert (14) are now living at the Gardeners Cottage, Allens Estate, Stoke Newington, Middx.


1911 Census, Percy (22), is employed as a Nursery Garden Hand, living with his parent, and brother Herbert (24) at, Holy Villa, Hatton Road, Cheshunt, Herts.

Wartime Service

Percy enlisted in Cheshunt, posted to the Hertfordshire Regiment and issued with the service number 204230.


Serving on the Western Front, he was Killed in Action on the 30th April 1918, at the end of the Battle of the Lys – Battle of Scherpenberg. (Battle of the Lys, 9th April – 29th April 1918). He is buried in Voormezeele Enclosure No. 3, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Grave Ref; XIV. B. 8.

Additional Information

His mother Harriet Young received a dependent pension of 8/- a week from 26th November 1918.


His effects of £10-12s-04d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £3, went to his father Edward Young.


His Headstone inscription reads: “A LIFE LAID DOWN AT DUTY’S CALL” was requested by Mr. E. Young, 8 Forest Road, Cheshunt, Herts. (His father).
