Pre War
Lionel Albert George Wood was born in 1899 in Dawes Lane, Sarratt, Hertfordshire son of Albert Robert Wood, and Beatrice Rosetta (nee Kemp) Wood. The eldest of three children Amy (B 1903) and Victor (B 1906).
He was Baptised on 5 November 1899, in the Parish of Chipperfield, Herts.
1901 Census records Lionel aged 1, living with his parents in, Dawes Lane, Sarratt, Herts.
1911 Census records Lionel age 11, at school, living with his parents, sister Amy 8, and brother Victor 5, in Dawes lane, Sarratt, Herts.
Wartime Service
Lionel travelled to the County Town of Hertford to enlist, posted to the East Kent Regiment with the service number 26440, we have no information as to when he joined his Battalion. He died on 3 September 1918, of wounds received in action, probably in the Casualty Clearing Station in Mericourt-L’Abbe, France. Possible received at the Second Battle of the Somme (21 Aug to 3 Sept 1918) he was aged 19.
The 10th Battalion was formed in Sollum, Egypt, in February 1918, from the Dismounted East Kent and West Kent Yeomanry, as part of the 230th Brigade, 74th Division. They were mobilized for war service at the beginning of May 1918, landing at Marseilles, France, on 7 May 1917.
Additional Information
His parents received a Dependents Pension of 6/- a week from 18 March 1919, their address was given as 58, Tower Hill, Chipperfield, Herts. His effects of £6-7s-1d, Pay Owing and his War Gratuity of £3, went to his mother Beatrice.
