John Frank Hutchings was born in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire in 1896, son of William Hutchings a, Coal Carman and Sarah Ann Hutchings (nee Hills). One of four children although one died in infancy.
1901 Census records John aged 5, living with his parents, brother William (10) and sister Eleen (1) at 8 Queens Road, Cheshunt, Herts.
1911 Census, John now aged 15 is working at a Garden Nursery, living with his parents and sister Ellen (11) in, Church Lane, Cheshunt, Herts.
Wartime Service
John enlisted at Enfield, Middx, posted to the 30th Labour Company “The Queens” (Royal West Surrey) Regiment with the service number 53474. Seeing action on the Western Front.
John died on the 21st May 1917, at No. 7 General Hospital of Cerebrospinal Meningitis, he is buried in the CWGC Longuenesse (St. Omar) Souvenir Cemetery, France.
Additional Information
His mother Sarah Hutchings received a dependents pension of 7/- a week from 27th November 1917.
His effects of £4-3s-9d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £3, went to his father William Hutchings.
His Headstone inscription “IN LOVING MEMORY THE LORD GAVE HIM REST AND PEACE” was requested by Mr. W. Hutchings, Howe Green, Nr. Hertford, Herts.
