Pre War
Hubert William Chastell was born in Waltham St. Lawrence, Berkshire, on 20th February 1899, son of Thomas Chastell a, Gardener and Sarah Emma Chastell, (nee Gamblin). One of eleven children.
1901 Census records Hubert aged 2, living with his parents and five siblings at, 4 Stanley Road, Wokingham, Berkshire.
Hubert attended St Mary C of E School, Worplesdon, Surrey, leaving in February 1910, when the family moved to Cheshunt, Herts, where he attended Dewhurst Endowed Boys School, leaving in February 1913, aged 14, to start work.
1911 Census records Hubert aged 12, at school, living with his parents and seven siblings at, 3 Eveline Cottages, Flampstead End, Cheshunt, Herts. Brother Harold John Chastell was born later in the year.
Wartime Service
Hubert enlisted in his home town of Cheshunt, Herts, posted to “The Queens” (Royal West Surrey Regiment), with the service number G/29630. Seeing action on the Western Front and in Italy.
In November 1917, Hubert and his Battalion was ordered to Italy, joining the front line near the River Piave, North West of Treviso, in February 1918, they were summoned back to France. Hubert died on 15th July 1918, from wounds received in action. Some documents record him as a Lance Corporal.
Additional Information
His mother Sarah received a dependents pension of 14/4 a week for life for the loss of two sons, Hubert and Frederick and his effects of £8-3s-2d, Pay Owing and his War Gratuity of £5. His older brother Private 235228 Frederick George Chastell of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers was killed in action on 31st July 1917. Formerly 5631 Hertfordshire Regiment.
