Pre War

Henry Charles Waterton was born in Hemel Hempstead in 1895, the son of Charles and Emily Waterton, and baptised on 2 August 1895 at St Paul's Church, Hemel Hempstead. He was one of five children.

On the 1901 Census the family were living at Alma Villas in Bridge Street, Hemel Hempstead, where his father was working as a general book keeper. Sadly his father died on 17 July 1901, aged 35,  when they were living at Whitbread Avenue, Kempston Road, Bedford, leaving effects of £76 10s.

He gave his address on enlistment as 3 Buckingham Street, Leicester. His mother later remarried  to William Wright in Leicester in 1914 and lived at 76 King Richard's Road, Leicester.

Wartime Service

Henry enlisted in Leicester on 23 March 1915 and joined the 4th Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment, as Private 4286. He was transferred on 15 May 1915 to the 2/4th Battalion, but was not sent to France until 24 February 1917.

His service record is a bit confusing. He was admitted sick to the hospital at the end of October and beginning of November 1917 and arrived at the 14th Casualty Clearing station at Calais on 22 January 1918, but then states that he 'JOINED UNIT'. The following page clearly reports that he was admitted to the 3rd casualty clearing station on 16 April 1918 with gun shot wounds, but strangely also on 13 June 1918 there is a comment that he is "to be reported as Died from Wounds 22/3/18".

CWGC, and other military records,  therefore state that he died of wounds on 22 March 1918, aged 23, and is buried at Grevillers British Cemetery, France.

Additional Information

His mother received a war gratuity of £14 and pay owing of £5 8s 9d. She also received a pension of £1 1s 0d. a week.
