Herbert was born in 1875 in Luton to Ann Hayward. ( Father named as Hayward).


On the 1891 Census Herbert, an errand boy, was living with his mother Ann Hayward. housekeeper with his brother Edward Hearson Hayward (born 1886) and sister Annie Maud  Hayward (born 1890) were living as boarders with John Hearson, widower and bricklayer, at 11 Jubilee Street, Luton.


Herbert enlisted in the Bedfordshire regiment on 21 Jun 1895 as Private 5367 in the 1st Battalion and served in India from 8 Feb 1897 to 10 May 1898. He was taken sick and was returned to UK for Medical Discharge in 1898.


On the 1901 Census Herbert, a labourer, was living with his parents, Edward, Annie and Elizabeth at London Road , Markyate.


On the 1911 Census Herbert now a building labourer, was living at 59 London Road , Markyate with with John (previously Hearson) and Ann Hayward, Edward, Annie and Elizabeth (born1892).


Herbert enlisted in the Bedfordshire Regiment as Private 3/8776 in the 3rd ( Special Reserve) Battalion around Nov 1913.

Wartime Service

He went to France on 3 Dec 1914 being posted to 1st Battalion who where in positions at Ypres. Herbert took part in the 2nd Battle of Ypres 22 Apr – 25 May 1915 . During the battle Herbert was wounded by Gas and although evacuated to the Base Hospital at Etaples, France he died from the effects of the gas on 12 May 1915/

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £3 and arrears of £3 14s 4d was paid to is mother Ann.
