Pre War

George Herbert Bryant was born in 1896 at Newmill, Tring, Berkhamsted, Herts,  the son and eldest child of  Herbert and Sarah Bryant and one of seven children, although one died in infancy. 


On the 1901 Census the family were living at 54 Thane Villas, Emanuel, Islington, London, where his father was working as a Domestic Servant. They had moved back to Tring by 1911 and were living at Wilstone, where George and his father were working as Farm Labourers. 


He was said to be living in Hemel Hempstead on enlistment. 


His mother later lived at 87 Hitchin Road, Luton, Beds on pension records. 

Wartime Service

George enlisted in Watford and served with the 1st/8th Battalion, Duke of Cambridge's Own (Middlesex) Regiment, initially with reg. no. 6105. 


He was killed in action on 19 November 1917, aged 21, and is buried at Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery, Belgium. 

Additional Information

His father received a war gratuity of £7 and pay owing of £5 14s 11d. Although some pension records exist, there is no indication of the amount of pension received, if any. N.B. original CWGC documents give the date of death as 18 November 1917.
