Frederick William Dedman was born on 3 Apr 1881, in St Pancras, London/Middx, son of Frederick Dedman, a Relief Stamper (born  1854 in St Pancras) and Elizabeth Hanna (nee Pearce) (born 1855 in Exeter, Devon). Frederick was baptised on 26 Jun 1881, at Holy Trinity Church, Haverstock Hill, Camden, Middx. 


On the 1891 Census Frederick aged 10, was living with his parents, sister Elizabeth (born 1884) and brother Alfred (born 1887) at 149, Carlton Road, St Pancras, London/Middx.


The 1901 Census records Frederick aged 20, working as a Goods Porter, living with his parents, sisters Elizabeth, Minnie (born 1894) and brother Alfred  living at 40, St Pancras Square, St Pancras, London/Middx.


On 6 Jul 1903, Frederick married Gertrude Baker of Wigginton the daughter of Charles and Phoebe Baker.


Frederick’s father died in 1904.


1911 Census records Frederick married with three children Frederick Charles (born1904), Maud Helena and Nora Kate (twins, born 1906), his occupation is given as a General Labourer and living in Church Row, Wigginton, Herts. They had one more child Lena Alice born in Apr 1914.

Wartime Service

Aged 38, Frederick enlisted in Tring, Herts, in May 1915, and was posted to the Army Service Corps, with the Service No. R4/ 095441, he joined at the Remount Depot, Army Service Corps in Romsey, Hampshire. He was assigned to "D" Squadron.  (the Remount organisation trained horses and mules for Army Service).


Frederick was taken ill while on active service and admitted to Hursley Park Camp Hospital on 24th December 1915, with appendicitis , although operated on , where he died on 30th December 1915. He is buried in Netley Military Cemetery, Hampshire. 

Additional Information

The value of his effects were £2-7s-9d, Pay Owing and £3, War Gratuity which went to his widow Gertrude who was also awarded £1-5s-0d per week War Pension for her and the 4 children.


Frederick's wife Gertrude (nee Baker) was the sister of Private 32331 Walter Ernest Baker, Killed in Action on 3rd May 1917.
