Frank Sharp Spacey was born in 1872 to Francis Henry Spacey, a straw hat blocker, and Phoebe (nee Sharp). They were living at 21 Chase Street, Luton with Francis’s parents. By the 1881 Census the family were living at 7 Chase Street Luton Frank now had 2 younger sisters, Lilly and Rosa.
On the 1891 Census Frank and his sister Lilly were living with his aunt Mary in New Town Street, Luton and his occupation was a straw hat blocker. He married Ellen Turner in 1893 and were living at 6 Chase Street on the 1901 Census with 2 sons Bertie born in 1894 and Percy born in 1897. Frank’s occupation was listed as a bricklayer’s labourer. By the 1911 Census Frank was lodging at New Town Street in Luton while his wife Ellen was living at East Avenue, Luton with Bertie (aged 17) now a straw plait dyer and Percy (aged 14) a foundry worker.
Wartime Service
Frank enlisted in Princess Charlotte of Wales’ (Royal Berkshire) Regiment as Private 19735.
He served as Frank Mitchell. Frank was posted to 3rd (Reserve) Battalion for his training. He died in Luton on 29 Sep 1916, he was aged 46.
Additional Information
War Gratuity of £3 and arrears of £1 19s 3d was paid to his widow. Son Bert enlisted as Private 10281 in 1st Battalion (A Coy) Bedfordshire Regiment and was killed in action on 7 Nov 1914 during 1st Battle of Ypres.
