Pre War

Ernest Arthur Fitzjohn was born in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, in 1890, son of William George Fitzjohn a, Labourer and Mary Katherine Fitzjohn (nee Jarrett). The third of eleven children although one died in infancy.


He was baptised on 19th October 1890, in the Parish of Waltham Cross, Herts.


1891 Census records Ernest aged 2 months, living with his parents, sister Kate (4) and brother William (2) in Eleanor Road, Cheshunt, Herts.


1901 Census records Ernest aged 10, living with his mother, three brothers and two sisters at, 99 Crossbrook Street, Cheshunt, Herts.


1911 Census, Ernest (20), is working as a Nursery Garden Hand, living with his parents, four sisters and four brothers at, 15 South View Cottage, Park Lane, Cheshunt, Herts.


Ernest married Alice Maud Mary Ford, the daughter of William & Maria Sarah Ford on 10th June 1916 at The Abbey Church of Holy Cross and St Lawrence, Waltham Abbey, Essex. They went on to have one son Ernest Gordon Leonard Fitzjohn born in 1917.

Wartime Service

Ernest enlisted at Bedford, posted to the Middlesex Regiment with the service 28932, later transferred to the East Surrey Regiment with the service number 25290.


On completion of his training, he saw service on the Western Front. He was awarded The Military Medal for Gallantry in the field. Ernest died on 17th October 1918, of wounds received in action. 

Additional Information

His effects of £5-2s-4d, Pay Owing and his War Gratuity of £5-6s-00d, went to his widow Alice Fitzjohn.


His elder brother Private 201924 William George Fitzjohn was Killed in Action on 20th September 1917.
