Pre War
Edward Groom was born in 1885 in Water End, Great Gaddesden, the son of Charles Edward and Emily Maria Groom and baptised at Great Gaddesden on 28 June 1885.
The family were living at No. 2 Little Gaddesden on the 1891 Census where his father was working as a shepherd. They remained in Little Gaddesden on the 1901 Census and Edward was then working as an agricultural labourer.
He married Alice Bliss on 12 April 1909 at St Mary the Virgin, Edlesborough, Beds and on the 1911 Census they, and their 1 month old daughter Ella, were living at nearby Summerleys, Eaton Bray, Dunstable, where he was working as a Gardener Nurseryman. The following year they had another daughter, Marjorie, born in May 1912 and lived at Church Lane, Eaton Bray prior to Edward's enlistment.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Luton and served in France with The Queen’s (Royal West Surrey Regiment).
Edward died of pneumonia in France on 22nd
March 1917, aged 31. He is buried at La
Neuville Communal Cemetery, Corbie, Somme, France.
Additional Information
His widow received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £ 3 3s 11d. She also received a pension of £1 2s 11d a week for herself and her two daughters.
