Pre War

Both the Hatfield In Memoriam Album and the memorial in St Mary’s Church, Newgate Street record Arthur Carloss. The former as: “Carloss, Arthur, Private, Royal Army Medical Corps, K.I.A. Arras 1917”. And the latter: “Private Arthur Carloss, RAMC & Bedfords, Arras. His name is also recorded on the Ponsbourne St Mary's Church Memorial, Newgate Street. However, he has not been found in Commonwealth War Graves Commission or Soldiers Died in the Great War records.

1911 Census: While there are three people called Arthur Carloss on the 1911 census none of them appear to have any relationship with the Hatfield area.

Wartime Service

*1 A medal card for an Arthur E or F Carloss has been found - Private in the Royal Army Medical Corps no. 49209.  Awarded the Victory Medal, British War Medal, and 1915 Star, but we cannot confirm this to be the correct man, particularly as there is no record of his death.

Often when a man is not identified, it is because he was discharged as medically unfit - these men were usually awarded the Silver War Badge to acknowledge their service.  Sometimes these men died sometime later ands were not recorded officially as war related deaths, although when proved to be so the CWGC update their records.

There other possibilities have been found in the Silver War Badge records:

Pte Arthur Edward Charles, 62534 Bedfordshire Regiment, discharged 1920 with the badge number B166611.

Pte Arthur Charles 538596 Royal Army Medical Corps, discharged 1920, with badge number 02253

What we do know is that the Bishop’s Hatfield Parish Magazine of October 1914, recorded: ”List of men who have joined the Forces..... Arthur Carloss – R.A.M.C.” and then in February 1915: “Ponsbourne News - Roll of Honour – In preparation for the Front.......A. Carloss.” Then later in December 1915: “Ponsbourne News _“The following letter has been received by the Vicar from Arthur Carloss, with the Field Ambulance, R.A.M.C. “It is with much pleasure and many thanks to you that I write a few lines in acknowledgement of yours yesterday.  I must thank you and all at Ponsbourne for their kind thoughts of me.  I am sure it is very encouraging for me to know that none of us are forgotten at the services held at your church.  I am keeping in splendid health, and fit and am still able to dodge the shells that are thrown about so carelessly out here.  We are at present having a little better weather than the last few days, for we had been having quite a lot of rain.  I will conclude, hoping that my letter will find you are all at Ponsbourne quite well, and thanking you again for your helpful letter”.

Yours Sincerely, A. Carloss

The letter from C.J. Armstrong (Vicar) to Mr M. A. Whitby reads:

St Mary’s Vicarage,

Ponsbourne,

Nr. Hertford.                                                                                         Dec 12, 1919.

Dear Sir,

I am enclosing a souvenir application for F. Hobbs, in case he has not sent the original.  He is away from home; so that is one reason for the delay.  I think there is only one outstanding card now, A Carloss. I understand he was a Canadian: but am making further enquiries.

Yours faithfully

M. A. Whitby
