Andrew Alfred Barton was born in Canning Town, Lon/Middx, in 1891, son of George Barton a, Plasterers Labourer, and Sarah Barton.
1891 Census records Andrew aged 3 months, living with his parents and brother George (2) in, Oak Road, West Ham, Lon/Middx. 1901 Census records Andrew aged (10), living with his parents, brothers George (12) and Vincent (4), now at 44, Sewardstone Street, Waltham Abbey, Lon/Essex.
On 14 September 1908, Andrew Enlisted in the army, joining the Lancashire Fusiliers with the service number 1336. Seeing service in various parts of the world.
Wartime Service
At the outbreak of war Andrew was a serving soldier with “A” Company, 1st Battalion, Lancashire Regiment stationed at Karachi, India, they were mobilized and moved to Aden, Yemen, and in December 1914, they sailed for England, arriving at Avonmouth, where they joined the 86th Brigade of the 29th Division.
In March they were mobilized for war, and embarked for Gallipoli via Alexandria, Egypt and Mudros. Landing at Cape Helles, Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. “The battalion seeing action at the 1st, 2nd, & 3rd Battles for Krithia and the Battle for the Achi Baba Heights”
Andrew received a Gun Shot Wound (GSW) soon after the landing and evacuated back to the UK for medical treatment. He was discharged under Kings Regulation “392 (xvi) K.R.” (No longer Physically fit for war service) on 29 November 1916, at Preston. Receiving his Silver War Badge, No. 111647 on 18th January 1917.
In the early part of 1919, Andrew married Alice Mary Woods the daughter of James and Emily Woods of Dorking, Surrey, They married in Dorking. They would later move to Cheshunt, Herts.
1921 Census records Andrew married to Alice, they had one son Alfred Andrew, 6 months old, Andrew's occupation is given as Army Pensioner no occupation for a living disabled. His Majesties Forces (Disabled).
Andrew died on 23 July 1921, of Ostia Myelitis, aged 30, following the GSW he received 6 years earlier in April 1915, at Gallipoli. He is buried in Cheshunt Burial Ground, Cheshunt.
Additional Information
His widow Alice did not receive a war widow’s pension as she married Andrew after he was discharged
