Alfred Charles Smith was born in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, in 1894, son of Harry and Gertrude Smith.


Baptised on 15th April 1894, in the Parish of Waltham Cross, Herts.


No Census record for Alfred or the family were found.

Wartime Service

Alfred enlisted in London, posted to the Army Service Corps, with the service number SS/11330.


No information on his military service was found other than he died at The Military Hospital, Trent Bridge, Nottingham, on the 6th August 1917, and his Medal Index Card (MID) showing he was awarded the British War and Victory medals, which indicates he served overseas. 


He is buried in the Cheshunt Burial Ground, Bury Green Road, Cheshunt, Herts.

Additional Information

His mother received a Dependents Pension of 3/6 a week from 26th March 1918.


His effects of £39-6-11, pay owing and his war gratuity of £5, went to his father Harry Smith.


His Headstone inscription: “HE ANSWERED HIS COUNTRY'S CALL AND DIED FOR HIS FRIENDS” was requested by: Mrs G. E. Smith, 98 Bertram Road, Bush Hill Park, Enfield, Middx, his mother.
