Pre War
Albert George Hatchett was born in Wyddial, nr Buntingford, Herts in 1898, the son of William and Catherine (Kate) Hatchett (nee Bonfield).
On the 1901 Census the family were living at Wyddial where his father was working as a gardener domestic. They remained in Wyddial in 1911 at which time 13 year old George was working as a stable boy.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in West London and served with the London Regiment, initially serving with the reg. no. 353703 and later with the 2nd/7th Battalion under reg, no. 7464.
Although the Register of Soldiers Effects records he was "killed in action", the Soldiers who Died in the Great War record states that he "died", usually suggesting illness or accident. The pension card naming his mother as dependant, gives his cause of death on 10 February 1917 as "Collapse". he was 19 years old.
Additional Information
His father received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing totalling of £3 1s 6d in two separate entries. His mother received a pension of 6s a week.
