Pre War

Born on 14th March 1888, in Tewin, to parents William and Jane, he was one of seven and in 1901 they were living in Lower Green, Tewin, and his father was a bricklayer’s labourer whilst Wilfred was a gardener. By 1911 they were living at 87 Wellington Street, Hertford, and his father was now an agricultural labourer and Wilfred was a gravel pit labourer.

He married Rose K Howard in 1919 and lived at 87 Wellington Street

Wartime Service

Wilfred enlisted, probably in March/April 1915 as Private 4455, Hertfordshire Regiment 1/1st Battn. He was later transferred to Bedfordshire Regiment as Private 266343. Wilfred is not recorded on the CWGC database as he was disembodied from the army on 7th April 1919.

This information along with the above military information was taken from his army medal index card and army medal rolls. He died on 3rd March 1955.

Additional Information

*1 Obviously 1955 would not normally fit. Family have been contacted and their response was that he served in both regiments and they also confirmed that he did in fact die on 3rd March 1955. Nevertheless, he would not normally appear on these memorials.
